An Amusing Email View of USA
Emails from the USA New York to Niagara - May 2006 Hi Everybody, ell, following on from the other day, I will enlighten you as to how I am progressing. First of all, last Thursday I flew to Stansted to meet with friends and spent a most enjoyable long weekend in Prague. There was lots of sun and drinks and the architecture in this place is the most varied of all the cities I have been too. From here I flew back to Stansted and then on to Dublin for an overnight stop of my flight to New York on the Monday morning. The drive from JFK airport took about 45 minutes and the taxi driver (who – for those old enough to remember – was a spit for the fatty half of Abbott & Costello) thought I looked so much like William Shatner; he went on about it for most of this time and suggested that we met up that evening to sell my autograph for 10 bucks a throw! I threw my things in my room at the Pennsylvania Hotel which is opposite Penn Station and Madison Square Garden where Ali had his big fight with Frazier in the 70's. I strolled around the 6th 7th & 8th Avenue's which intersect sideways with all the ‘streets’. I was on 7th Avenue and 31st Street and 42nd street and Times Square was just a 10 minute walk away. It’s quite easy when you get used to it I was told - I never got used to it! This first afternoon/evening, for some reason I felt a little intimidated, maybe because of all the hustle and bustle, much the same as Piccadilly on a Saturday afternoon? But as my next 4 days went on, I found that I really liked the place and in particular the people of New York, which apart from an obvious stressful heart attack district, I could quite easily live there. The people were very friendly, even when they did not have to be. A couple of days later when I was waiting for the city bus tour near Times Square an Eddie Murphy type character came along side me and untied his bike from a lamppost where he had obviously left it earlier and said to me "Hey man, Captain T... Kirk, you’re the man" as he slapped my hands both sides (as only the yanks do) and when I said "Yea OK, Beam me up Scotty" he said "Hey, you’ve heard this a few times before eh?" and then he got on his bike and rode off up 42nd street. Other than this bus thing, I did the usual; a walk in Central Park, Empire State Building, Greenwich Village, Chinatown (had a nice cheap lunch here) Ferry to Staten Island past the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero etc. I had a nice meal in NY at a restaurant recommended by one of those men that stand outside hotels with large hats calling cabs for their guests. I wish he hadn’t because it was just a tad expensive. When I saw Surf & Turf on the menu, I couldn’t resist, because it’s not like S&T in the UK - i.e. a piece of grisly sirloin & a couple of prawns, this was a 10oz fillet steak, (obviously ‘stood’ for a while) medium rare and a 10oz lobster tail and it was superb. I don't normally eat steak, but in the US.....great! Wine here started at $50. The bill was $138 - just for me – wow! Onwards now to Niagara/Rockie Mountains/Vancouver & Island/San Francisco/Yosemite Park/Death Vally & Las Vegas/Tombstone/San Antonio/Dallas/New Orleans & Miami.......... |
